Concrete demolition contractors Castle and Pryor have recently completed a major project for Network Rail beneath Waterloo station.
Working for railways contractor YJL Infrastructure, the company was deployed to isolate and remove concrete wall sections and staircases situated beneath the station's platforms. Further work included the drilling of holes above these concrete sections prior to their removal to allow the insertion of permanent steel support frames.
A high frequency diamond drill was used to create holes for the steel support frames and a hydraulic wire saw then isolated the sections that required removal. Once segregated from the rest of the structure, the condemned sections were broken up and removed by a trio of Brokk remote controlled demolition robots.
The subterranean project was undertaken with strict adherence to railway operational and safety procedures. Castle and Pryor's zero-emission equipment and plant machinery ensured that the air quality in the operation's confined area was not compromised.
Castle and Pryor Director Mark Castle explains, "We were able to bring our considerable experience to bear on this difficult and challenging project. Our use of zero-emission, remotely operated machines that are accurate and efficient has allowed the project to finish on budget and on schedule".
